As an educational leader in Washington, DC, Angela opened two schools to target under-served and marginalized communities, an all-girls middle school in Anacostia and an alternative school for Opportunity Youth. Engaging these challenging populations requires expertise in empathy and innovation, and demands adaptive, responsive, and supportive leadership. During her tenure as a principal, Angela retained approximately 93% of her staff each year. Old and new teachers alike remained committed to the school due to her commitment to their professional development and growth. This investment in human capital always pays off and has become a cornerstone of Angela’s leadership.
Angela believes it’s possible to reimagine schools, increasing equity from the inside out—she’s convinced that schools should work from and through the margins to influence the center of education and permanently alter academic norms.
Twelve years in leadership and incubation are not easy, but the support of various fellowships, organizations, and partnerships made success much more attainable for Angela. Her career was built on relationships, honesty, and feedback. As Angela moves from executive leadership into leadership and school development, this trend continues, cultivating partnerships of introspection and personal growth that lead to innovative schools, a dynamic staff, and engaged students.
Personally, Angela delights in laughter and learning, and thinks the two are closely related. She lives with her wife in Northeast DC and enjoys biking and Bob’s Burgers.
